Garden Party at The Manse – 3 July 2010 Our prayers for good weather for the Garden Party for The Hotpec Cameroon Orphanage and Action for Children were answered. We drew back our curtains on the morning of 3 July to gorgeous blue skies and sunshine. Our ‘wonderful team’ had erected gazebos on the Friday night so that on the Saturday morning various stalls could be set up; tables and chairs put in place and the refreshment tent prepared. A large gazebo was erected for the Soar Valley Music Centre band that was going to entertain us during the afternoon. Edward Sakwe (the Methodist Minister who lives in the Manse) and his family and friends got the barbeque organised and all was ready when the gates were opened at 2pm. There was a steady flow of people from 2pm onwards. They wandered around the stalls, browsed through the various books on the Memorabilia table, bought raffle tickets and of course indulged in the delicious Cream Teas. People stayed most of the afternoon because the weather was glorious and they enjoyed listening to the band playing some of their favourite tunes. There were some very talented soloists in the band and the singer was particularly entertaining because he involved the audience in some of his songs. One lady in the garden was celebrating her 84th birthday and she was serenaded with ‘Happy Birthday’. The children were quite happy playing with the various board games and Edward and friends were having fun sending smoke signals from their barbecue!
The raffle was called and all too soon it was 5pm and time to end the afternoon. It was a very special event and altogether £454 was raised. This sum will be divided equally between The Hotpec Cameroon Orphanage and Action for Children.
