Men's Pantomime

As far as we know we are the only Pantomime Group in the country with an all male cast.

We meet from the End of September until Show Week - usually the schools' Spring Mid Term Break (February Half Term).

Principals rehearse on Monday evenings from the end of October and full cast rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 7:45 until Christmas then its full cast rehearsals on Mondays and Thursdays.

Garden Party at The Manse

Garden Party at The Manse – 3 July 2010

Our prayers for good weather for the Garden Party for The Hotpec Cameroon Orphanage and Action for Children were answered. We drew back our curtains on the morning of 3 July to gorgeous blue skies and sunshine. Our ‘wonderful team’ had erected gazebos on the Friday night so that on the Saturday morning various stalls could be set up; tables and chairs put in place and the refreshment tent prepared. A large gazebo was erected for the Soar Valley Music Centre band that was going to entertain us during the afternoon. Edward Sakwe (the Methodist Minister who lives in the Manse) and his family and friends got the barbeque organised and all was ready when the gates were opened at 2pm.

Evangeline Rose - a gift from Monday Women's Group

In June 1996 when our first Granddaughter Evangeline was born my friends at the Monday Women's Group bought me a very special present - an Evangeline Rose. It was quite small, but 14 years later it has grown to be a very attractive rose which gives us great pleasure to admire when we are sitting in our garden.

Evangeline (or Evie as she prefers to be called) has also grown. She is a very pleasant girl - she helps at the Saturday Coffee Shop when she visits us.

I attach a picture of Evie and the Evangeline Rose - thanks very much to the Monday Women's Group for all their thoughtfulness and love over the years which is very much appreciated.

Southwell Minster Thursday Group Outing

The focus of Birstall Thursday Group's Summer Outing was a visit to Southwell Minster.

We set off by coach in glorious sunshine to be met by the Rev. John Hucknall ex-Superintendent minister of the Circuit. John had arranged for us to join him for coffee and chat in the Minster refectory. He was asked "What was the difference between a Minster and a Cathedral?" John explained that many years ago many large churches were built and called a Minster, over the years some of these Minsters were elevated to Cathedral status and each cathedral had a Bishop.

Sunshine and smiles on the Garden Trail

After a week of rain there was relief all round that the Birstall Garden Trail took place in dry and sunny weather. As if to emphasise what might have otherwise been, the heavens opened at 5.27pm on the Sunday - with just 3 minutes of the official opening time left - drowning those left taking down the gazebos. It was wonderful to meet so many people going in and out of the gardens. The gardens themselves were an absolute delight - so many treasures hidden out of sight behind houses and such creativity on show!

What’s happening at Sunday Club

Sunday Club Service 7th March 2010

The morning service on March 7th was led by the members of the Sunday Club.

They performed a modern day version of the feeding of the 5000, based on a group of friends who went to a pop concert and afterwards found that they hardly had any food to eat, but by everyone around pooling what they had, everyone had enough to eat.

They sang about going on a trip to Bradgate Park, led us in prayers and singing of hymns.

This was a wonderful service, which everyone enjoyed.

After the service, the congregation was treated to "Sunday Clubs got talent" where the members of the club performed, there was singing, jokes, musical instrument playing and even a martial arts demonstration. During this tea and cakes were served.

£220 was raised towards the funds to take senior members of the club to MYCA Breakout.

p.s. After attending the practise on the Saturday afternoon, I can tell you how hard the staff of the club work and how much we owe them for all the time and effort they put into this most important part of Christian life. Thank you to all members of the club.

Pancake Day

March 23rd 2010, saw another Pancake Day, when the girls of Birstall's Girls' Brigade served fairtrade pancakes to friends and family. The choice of fairtrade toppings available was, lemon juice, jam, chocolate, bannana, toffee and cream. The event was well supported.

Saturday Coffee Shop Booking Fee for 2010

As from 1/01/2010 all bookings for the Saturday Coffee Shop will be subject to a fee of £25. The exceptions to this will be when the Coffee Shop is being run exclusively for Church funds( in 2010 there will be fourteen coffee shops for Birstall Methodist Church ), Girls Brigade, Boys Brigade, World Church and Christmas Festival.

Special Needs Playgroup

BIRSTALL’S PLAYGROUP for children with special needs provides care for 30 youngsters aged between six weeks to four years. The playgroup, which runs its sessions in the Methodist Church rooms, has been busy organising fundraising events to buy much needed play equipment. Playgroup Leader Deborah Hoggar said: “The specialist equipment we need needs to be very robust and suitable for children with very different needs - some of the kids here have sensory difficulties while others have physical disabilities.” The playgroup, which has been going for more than 30 years, is run by Deborah and 18 volunteer helpers. Children in Need have provided generous funding, the TSB have provided a grant and the Birstall branch of the Alliance & Leicester have donated £100.

Coffee Shop

Our coffee shop is open to all, for tea, coffee & cakes, friendship and conversation, on Tuesday till Friday and Saturday mornings 10 am - 12 pm.

It is also available for private hire during the week. The building already hosts a number of both church and outside groups, which include dancing, Weight Watchers, mother and toddlers group.

Juniors

What is Juniors?

Juniors is our second section and is for children aged between 8 and 11.

What do they do?

Juniors have fun! Their meetings are crammed full of challenges, games and activities, usually ones that they themsleves have suggested. There are hundreds of activities catering for just about every possible interest. At the same time we try to encourage them to explore other new interests. There is loads of variety and little chance of becoming bored!

The award programme is specifically designed to encourage a child to look beyond themselves. Many are interested in one type of activity - perhaps sports, or natural history. Our special programme provides for such interests and at the same time gently urges them to try others of a different type. This provides a balanced all round programme - which includes spiritual and social input, as well as physical and adventure activities in 5 different programme zones . . .

Body - fit for fun
Mind - think and do
Spirit - God and me
Community - me and my world
Creativity - make and do

Juniors will also get to go on trips and days out, to places like the zoo, theme parks or a farm. As well as possibly going on a weekend camp or holiday that is often the highlight of the year.

Juniors is about . . .

Through the many different activities, Juniors will . . .

get to know people and learn to work together
explore their community
personally develop

What else do I need to know?

Juniors have a special uniform that they can wear. As everyone wears the same thing they feel as though they belong. However nobody is excluded because they do not have the right clothes.

How long do they meet for?

Juniors offers a full and varied programme, typically lasting 1½ hours with a few if any individual activities lasting more than ten minutes. The weekly section meeting would usually be finished between 8.00 and 8.30 pm.

Why Juniors?

Juniors are developing rapidly. Between the ages of 8 and 11, there are big changes in a child's mental, emotional, social and physical development. However, all children are different and have a variety of needs. The relationships we form with children at this age can be important in assisting them to achieve a sound sense of personal and group identity.

Hello there i am Pauline the new chairman of the group I thought you would like to know a few things about us.
We meet every Monday night @ 7-30pm we have a speaker most weeks with many interesting things to talk about we also go to the theatre and we have a skittle night and that is really is good fun, we do manage to knock a few down and it always makes people laugh at the way we throw them. We also have a project that we raise money for a charity, coffee mornings and raffles all help to swell the purse. If you would like to join us you are very welcome, we are a happy crowd and we like to have a good chat and put the world to right look forward to seeing you any Monday
